Creative management is about more than being a subject matter expert in any single field. It’s about understanding how to get the most out of the people who work for you, recognizing their strengths and helping the entire team to contribute in the most meaningful way possible. That takes good communication; it’s about combining candor with tact, clearing defining expectations, and seeking to fully understand the obstacles in the way of success so that a plan of action can be developed to overcome whatever challenges stand in the way. It’s also about having an interdisciplinary approach to creativity, understanding the general capabilities and limitations within relevant fields so that business needs and expectations can be communicated properly to the people who are the experts. It’s about recognizing the foundational principles that underpin all creative disciplines, things like color-theory, composition, rhythm, line and form, and scaffolding that with enough technical understanding to be able to collaborate effectively with a photographer, a 3D designer, an illustrator, a graphic designer, or any other specialized team member.
